Final Mission: ePortfolio Reflection Dissemination

Hello readers,

For this final mission, I have created a presentation to show what I have been updating throughout my ICT module in the Master degree that I am studying and which is close to end. In my presentation I present you my learning journey throughout this course, showing you the different stages of my e-project and a reflections on this.

To create my presentation I used Prezi which is a fun interactive tool that makes it easy to develop dynamic presentations without design training that embeds video with cool transitions. You can easily insert images, video, sound or directly import from Google. Like a huge whiteboard, Prezi gives you space to organise your presentation. With screenshots of the challenges, artifacts, outcomes and other elements and details included in my e-project I will tell you the key ideas I took away from each of the modules, my favourite app I learnt about and the challenge that I enjoyed the most of the entire course. And to record my voice I used Screencast-O-Matic which is described in a previous post.

To be honest, I have to say that at first I was scared of this course. I didn’t know how to start working on the challenges, but step by step I started to enjoy every time more and more. Overall, I enjoyed and learned a lot from each of the challenges, as a person and professionally. Working in groups is something I have to highlight as well. It was a pleasure to work with them and share good moments at the same time that we created our fantastic collaborative e-project about European Geography.
Another great idea that stands out in this course is the ePortofolio in which we have recorded all our work. It is something to keep as a memory but also something that I would like to carry out with my students in the near future. Now that I experience first hand updating my blog with my own work I am sure that my students will enjoy it as much as I did. And it was very original to have our own hashtag: #ictclil_urjc to share our work in Twitter.
Augment World Book Day was without any doubt my favourite challenge. I believe at this time of the course I was much more confident working with online tools. Moreover, it is a very original way to celebrate the World Book Day. I didn’t hear before about the Aurasma app which is a very original tool to bring realia to a picture, to turn every day objects, images, and places, into interactive opportunities through animation, video, audio, and 3D content. It is my favourite app!
Finally, I would like to say thank you to all my peers as I have learnt a lot thanks to them and of course to our teacher Mª Jesús as without her this journey wouldn’t have been possible and for putting up with us when we complained a lot! It was a pleasure.

Assessment – Creating a Rubric to evaluate E-Projects

Evaluating my e-project

For this mission I had to create a rubric to evaluate my e-project in which I have taken into consideration the key aspects, the expected progress and my own assessment criteria. Bearing in mind the recommendations of our teacher, my rubric consists of four elements:

  • The aspects of the learning process to be assessed: Quality Content, Spelling and Grammar, Teamwork, Innovation and Originality, Multimedia and Tools, Dissemination, and Accessibility.
  • The criteria that will be used, with a definition of each specific aspect to be assessed.
  • A scale of ratings, including 4 progressive ratings through which I will evaluate those aspects within the project. These ratings are: Beginning (Score: 0),  Developing (Score: 1), Developing (Score: 2), Accomplished (Score: 3), and Exemplary (Score: 4).
  • Clear and easy descriptions to concrete the performance levels.

Visiting the Playpen provided by our teacher, I found very interesting tools and tips for creating online rubrics. For example, most of my peers used Quick Rubric. However, I decided to create my own design as I preferred  to choose the colours and other features of the image of my rubric. Then, I started to create my rubric in a Microsoft Word document. I believe that creating a rubric in this way take a longer period of time, but you can personalise it depending on your needs. If you want to create your rubric using a Table in your Word Processing Software, what you have to do is to follow the next steps:

– Open a new document.

– Give a title to your rubric at the top of the page (For example, in my case: Rubric to evaluate e-projects)

– Add a space or two and go to TABLE in the top menu bar. Choose Insert—>Table. The new window that opens allows you to determine the number of columns and rows that you will need. Scales are usually found in the columns; in my case the scales range is composed by 4 levels. The components of the task are usually found in the rows; as I said before, I needed 6 of these to create my rubric. Don’t worry if you make a mistake on either of the numbers because you can always add and delete columns and rows later. When you save the settings, the table will appear on your page.

– Then, you can begin putting your scale and dimensions in the rows and columns. You have to decide if you want to have your scale move in increasing or decreasing values (for example, my rubric starts with lowest). Finally, add the dimension characteristics in the cells; these are the explanations of the parameters in the scale for each dimension. When you have finished creating your rubric, you only have to save it as a pdf document to maintain the format.

The more improvements you want in how your rubric looks, the more you will need to practice with tables. However, if you are used to work with this tool, you will create a clear and neat design in a few minutes.Give the rubric to your students when they begin their learning activity. You can make changes to your rubric if necessary and try it out again with your students.

Creating a rubric made me reflect about the importance of assessment. A rubric is a printed set of criteria for assessing knowledge, performance or product and for giving feedback. Taking into account different assessment methods, tools and instruments, I consider a rubric is ideal to assess knowledge, performance or product and to make explicit for students what is being assessed. At the same time, you can identify which areas may need improvements and extra support. Rubrics can be used to focus teaching and learning, involve students more closely in their assessment and also to develop students’ competence at self-assessment.

There are many sites on the internet that can assist you in the creation of rubrics. But be careful when using rubrics developed by other people for other assessment tasks as they may not always fit with your assessment task. The best is to create your own rubric that matches with the key aspects of what you want to assess and your own assessment criteria.

Do you know what “World Book day” is? 

World Book Day is a celebration! It’s a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and what is the most important: it’s a celebration of reading. In fact, it’s the biggest celebration of its kind, designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world.

23 April is World Book and Copyright Day. How can we celebrate this important day in our classrooms? As you know, I am studying a Bilingual Teaching Master in which we are carrying out a lot of activities for ICT. For this challenge, our teacher had the fantastic idea to celebrate the World Book Day while we are carrying out our mission. I really like this idea! We are carrying out an enjoyable activity at the same time that we are developing language and digital competence, fostering and sharing reading skills, learning about the importance of connecting cultural  aspects of a language and acquiring tips about a lesson plan to celebrate events in the classroom.

Would you like to know how we are going to celebrate this day and what our mission is? First of all, we have to record a brief video clip or audio track explaining what type of books we read, which is our favourite book and why we recommend it; what features define us as a reader. For this step, I used Screencast-O-Matic in order to record myself and VideoPad to edit my video.

As you will discover soon, my favourite book is “The shadow of the wind” by the Spanish writer Carlos Ruiz Zafón. It is a worldwide bestseller. I first read this book when I was in high school. After it, I have read other novels from this author but this book remains my favourite of all time.

Next, we have to search the book cover of our favourite book, or create a meaningful collage of our self-portrait as a reader. It is really important to bear in mind to use Creative Common images which you can use for educational purposes, and cite and attribute. I decided to use my own images. Last December, I visited the famous bookstore called Lello in Porto where I have a beautiful picture of my self surrounded by books. I decided to use it for my self-portrait as a reader with a quote of my favourite book. The quote I chose is the next:

Then, we have to start the most challenging part, to create a “trigger image“. Do you know what is a “trigger image”? It is my first time creating one. A trigger image is one of the basic building blocks of an Aura. It is an image uploaded to our databases that will be detected when a user views it through the camera. When it is detected, an overlay will appear. You must be wondering how can you create your own trigger image. It is really easy. What you need to do first is to download free Aurasma app to you mobile device: Android IOS and sign up using you mobile device and log in the Aurasma app, and create your own public profile. Our teacher always remember us the importance of digital identity when providing your public profile with a meaningful name, as you may want to use it later in your lessons. Then, go to your computer and log in to the desktop Aurasma Studio with the credentials you used when you signed up for the app and you will see your account. Aurasma app help us as teachers to use augmented reality (AR) to turn everyday objects, images, and places into new, interactive opportunities to engage with our students through striking graphics, animation, video, audio, and 3D content.

Once you have your account, what you have to do is to click “Trigger Images” and upload an image file. Next, click “Overlays” and upload the video/audio file you want to use according to the image. Now, click “Auras” and create a new one by clicking “Add”. Title it, add your “trigger image“, and your “overlay“. Fix size and position, and save. The, you will have your trigger image ready. You can check that everything is working properly by opening your own Aurasma app with your mobile device and place it over the image that you have used as your trigger image. If everything has gone well, you will automatically discover the hidden augmented reality. If you need further help, you can watch this video created by some of my master peers. Finally, you know as teachers how important is to share our works and collaborate with each other in order to make a more meaningful education. Our teacher has invited us to take part in her Pinterest board: A wall of books, the social collaborative board to celebrate World Book Day. On this wall, we will pin and share our final work with our favourite book. We can pin any book or title, a favourite from childhood, a current book or something we’ve read and enjoyed. Have a loot at it:

Creating a tutorial that supports learners

This is our last mission in groups and it consists of creating a collaborative slideshow/animation/screencast/story/comic about a CLIL goal that matches with our e-project and that supports learners. We decided to design a video in order to create a tutorial for an ICT tool that our students might need help with.

One goal our students have to accomplish in our eproject is to create an infographic. Probably, they will use Piktochart as we have give an infographic designed with Piktochart as an example and we will recommend them to use this online tool. Therefore, we all agreed to create a tutorial to explain our students how to use Piktochart.

To create our tutorial, we have used “Screencast-O-Matic” which is an online tool to record on-screen activity for short tutorials and communicate while you demonstrate. The quality of image and sound is high. It is ideal for anyone needing a fast recording app to create a video file and share on Youtube. The free features are 15-minute recordings, screen & webcam recording, publish to YouTube and save as a video file.

We can use this tool with our students for many purposes. For instance, our students can create a video with this app to read their stories created with StoryJumper. They will be able to record the screen while they are turning the pages telling the story. Therefore, they would be able to practice their speaking while they practice their ICT skills in an entertaining and engaging way.

To finish the composition of our video we used “IMovie”, exactly the same we used for the previous challenge. We were really happy with the results we had in our previous video and we thought that this app would be perfect to create the tutorial as well.

Creating a tutorial is a good thing to bear in mind when introducing difficult e-tools in our classes. I have never thought about creating a tutorial in this way for my students before, but after having created this one, it would not be the last! There are some tools that are difficult to manage even for adults. From our own experience, we have found difficulties when using some online tools. This why we consider vital to scaffold our students by doing tutorials of online tools.

Once more, we are participating in a nationwide collaborative project: AporTICs. We are looking forward to seeing our tutorial published on their blog. It is a very interesting project where teachers and students share tutorials about TIC in order to learn from each other. You can have a look at their website to see many amazing tutorials. My first Live Chocotalk

Last Thursday 7th of April, my master´s class have the opportunity to participate a live Choco-Talk about “How CLIL can contibute to having happier bilingual learners“.

First of all, I would like to highlight it was an amazing experience. Despite I was really nervous I really enjoyed it. We have to thank our teacher Mª Jesús for introducing us to this event and to make possible that we carry out our own Choco-talk. It was the first time I heard about it. This live event is a crossover with the collaborative project ‘Tertulias con Sabor a Chocolate‘. We have joined it with the aim of debating about CLIL and how it can contribute to improving learners’ emotional intelligence and making them happier people.

We participated in the event in groups, within our groups we were assigned different roles. In my group, I played the role of speaker along with Inma. Our mission was to give tips, hints and share our opinions about this methodology. People had the chance to meet the different speakers live and the rest of my peers were curating content and spreading the word at social networks. You can find their work in #ictclil_urjc and #chococharlas hashtags.  Public were welcome at our Google+ event or directly at our Youtube channel
Victor and Elena were community manager, their role was promoting the event some days before, telling through Twitter the things that the speakers were going to discuss during the event and remembering the Chocotalk. Ana and Natalia were our curators who were in charge of collecting all the information told by all the speakers, but also the tweets that the community managers published every day before and along the Chocotalk. Their mission was to make a summary of the most significant aspects of our Chocotalk. To wrote our summary, our curators used the web tool “Storify“. You can have a look at it:
I have to say I was really surprised with the results of the event. I consider all of us worked really hard to do our best. We have to thanks to Laura for being such a good moderator as well but also to all my peers who created very nice posters to promote our Chocotalk, the numerous tweets and the final job by the curatos. It was a really interesting experience. I hope in the near future I can repeat it as I consider it is really useful to share opinions with other professionals about CLIL methodology. Congratulations to all the members of my master for such a great job!

Planning and recording our video challenge

Planing our video challenge
Our teacher introduced us storyboards as the blueprints of any digital video challenge/project/mission/trailer/activity. In this task we have to work again with our group to complete a storyboard for a short video challenge which we will include in our CLIL eproject. The video will be made after. I really enjoyed working in this challenge with my peers Ana Martín, Víctor, Natalia, Inma and Elena.

First of all, we considered what is a storyboard. A storyboard consists of drawings and notes in frames. The frames represent a scene in the video challenge. Then, we thought about of a goal we wanted to achieve in our e-project and decided what tool we would use to create our storyboard. The goal was chosen from our common CLIL e-Project and this objective is “to learn about the physical and political features and some of the most distinguishing representations of the European countries”. Moreover, after having had a look at the playpen that our teacher provided us with different tools to create storyboards, we decided to use “Storyboard That”.

“Storyboard That” is a great option for re-enforcing English, History , foreign languages, or for creating graphical organisers. You can create a story for your students or just to present any kind of information. As it is in the form of a comic strip it is very visual and engaging for them. We found this tool very easy to use and it offers many possibilities for creating attractive stories. Among its features, you can choose the number of vignettes and the background of your story, the characters and their appearance and you can also add text in the form of speech bubble or other shapes.

Nevertheless, there are some aspects about this tool that could be improved. For example, the creation you are working on is not automatically saved. We consider it is easier that having to save it yourself each time you introduce a change on it. It would be great if the tool do it automatically. There are also many pictures, icons, characters that you can not use unless you have a premium account. As my peer Ana suggested, it would be fantastic if SoryboardThat had an option to record voices. Our students could practice the four skills: speaking, listening, writing and reading and also their computer and creative skills when creating their comic.

Having said that, from our experience StoryboardThat is a fabulous tool to be incorporated in our lessons. It could be used in many ways. After your storyboard is created, you can easily export it to high resolution storyboard cells, PDF or PowerPoint File. Then you are ready to present it to your students.

Finally, as you can see in our storyboard, our students will have to create and infographic to present it to their class. We have created an infographic about Norway as an example of what our students will have to do in order to achieve this goal. You can have have a look at it:



Then, it was time to… Record our video challenge! 

We have created our video challenge using the app “IMovie” in the ipad of our peer Victor. As template we have used the comic we previously made with “StoryboardThat”. Then, we have recreated it to play and record it on video. We have enjoyed this app particularly because of the clear and neat production that you can create with it. It is very intuitive and fast to handle. This app allows you to add the music you like most. Furthermore, you are able to add a mixture of videos and pictures, cropping images/videos and labelling pictures. Our students can use this tool in our lessons as well. For example, they can present their candidatures for the Olympic Games and they will enjoy this activity as much as we did. At the same time, students will practise their speaking and listening skills while learning content. One negative aspect about this app is that we couldn’t find to many options of sizes of the font, we suggest it should have a bigger range.

I believe in this challenge we have worked in a cooperative way which has been very enriching for everyone. We had be able to share our opinions and ideas and we had a lot of fun when we were recording our video.

Once our storyboard and video were ready, we have participated in another nationwide educational collaborative project the ESL times. They are going to public our work tomorrow. Creating and disseminating an InfoEduGraphic

For this mission we were asked to work in teams. I consider it is a great plan as we can share our points of view and contribute with our ideas. It can be difficult sometimes to organise and agree with each other but I really enjoyed working with my group. It is really important to know how to work cooperatively in order to teach our students how to do it as well. This why I consider it is an important chance to experiment first-hand cooperative work. Moreover, as teachers and peers we should share our materials and ideas in order to contribute to a more enriching education.

Geography is our common topic and our team is composed by VíctorAnaNatalia, Inma, Elena and myself.  The name of our common e-project is: “Travelling around Europe”  and within it we decided to create a final activity for our students to learn about the physical and political features, as well as about some of the most distinguishing representations of some European countries. Our aim in this task is to create an infographic explaining how to carry out this final activity that our students will develop in order to achieve  the learning outcomes in a motivating way. “The Olympic games” is the name of the activity and the title of our infographic which will be presented and carried out at the end of the project.

It was my first time designing an Infographic but it will not be the last!
Infographic is a very visual representation of content and information. Your students will love it. You can use it to present them an activity, or alternatively they can create their own infographic to present their works.

To carry out and design our own one , we chose Piktochart, as some of us had previously evaluated an e-project in which the author had used this tool. Victor suggested us to try it and we liked how the final result looks. Indeed, Piktochart is a perfect tool to create attractive infographics, presentations or reports for our lessons. Among its features we can highlight the templates, backgrounds, graphics and different types of letter. You can change the background and add icons or photos to make it more attractive. Moreover, you can change the icons colours to better fit your infographic design. After finishing your design, you will be able to download it in different formats and share it. Honestly, we did not find any disadvantage since we consider that it worked fantastic and allowed us to accomplish the task without any problem.

Using infographics can improve cognition by utilising graphics to enhance the students visual system’s ability to see patterns and trends. When students create infographics, they are using information, visual, and technology.

Finally, what was much more exciting was the opportunity to participate in a nationwide project. We sent our creation to Infographic to InfoEdugraphics nationwide collaborative blog. Our infographic is now published it in their blog and we were so lucky because they also gave us the next award:

CLIL eProject Prototype

Hello everyone

For this mission, I designed a CLIL outline for Primary Education and a table of skills and goals that my students must accomplish and achieve.

Following our teacher instructions, I have created a prototype of what information, topics and activities I would like to develop in my CLIL eproject. As it is a first approach, I have taken into consideration that I maybe should make some changes after. I am looking forward to receiing your feedback and suggestions to improve my eproject.

For this, I have created a draft with Google Docs to prototype the outline of my eprojects using the template provided in the task:

Then, I started to explore the different tools to create a video eproject in order to present my prototype to my peers. At first I was going to use GoAnimate but the free trial was only for 15 days and I wasn’t sure if I could access to my work after it. Then I started to use Wideo but the free version only allowed me to record a 30 seconds video so I considered it wasn’t enough time. Finally, after having a look to different tools I decided to use VideoScribe to create my eproject video clip.    .

Different to other tools I have tried before, I like much more VideoScribe as it offers much more variety of animations to create a video but you have to download the software to your computer to use it. I like it because you can make white board style animations, adding images, text and music with a professional finish. When you finish your video you can share it bia Youtube, Facebook or Power Point or export it to your computer if you go Pro. My first attempt worked but the music I chose when I shareit in Youtube I couldn’t hear it so I changed the music and it worked out the second attempt!

When all my peers would have posted their prototypes as well, we will give each other feedback in order to improve these. To evaluate our projects we will take into account  learning goals, language content and communication, methodology, assessment tools and criteria and dissemination means. I think it is a really good idea as we are going to have more points of view and advices. We can also have different ideas for our projects when we observe other people’s works that we didn’t think about before.

Evaluating CLIL eprojects

Hello everyone,

To create my presentation of an eproject evaluation I have chosen biteslide. It was my first time using this tool and I liked the design but I didn’t like that it doesn’t have too many options of text size and types. It is very basic regarding to backgrounds and items to design your presentation. However, it has search tools to add your own pictures or videos from Google or Youtube.

I believe this task is very useful to create our own project. After evaluating this project I am more conscious of what I have to take into consideration for my design elements, tasks, skills and proposals.

I also considered different tips that I read in different articles provided by my teacher such as Principles of Visual Design for eBooks, by Walton Burns, or  CLIL Teaching Projects, in which you find interesting information about eproject design. I believe it is something new for many of us and these articles help you to get involved deeper in this trend.

Becoming a Content Curator

After creating our Bank of Common Knowledge for CLIL my next mission was to organise in a board different CLIL resourses which will be useful for the e-project we will carry out after. For this, I used again Pinterest as I am more familiar with this tool. The other options were Listly and Sybaloo Edu which I will investigate for future use. This task is very useful as you organise the materials in order to have these at hand at any time.. I collected different resourses as I said before in a board in Pinterest  named “Useful CLIL resourses”:


The mayority of the material was taken from the collaborative bank that I posted before and I added some content from other websites as well. Now I can continue using it every time I find a useful resourse.
